Obama’s Latest Ruse Plays Us For Fools

Don’t bust a gut …

President Barack Obama will ask Congress for greater powers on Friday to shrink the federal government and consolidate several trade and commerce related agencies, which would save the government just $3 billion over 10 years, and eliminate 1,000 jobs.

$3 billion over TEN YEARS?  The government during the last three years has borrowed on average about $4 billion EACH DAY.  In addition, Obama notified Congress on yesterday of his intent to raise the nation’s debt limit by $1.2 trillion to cover increased U.S. spending commitments. The proposed savings, $3 billion, is one-four-hundredth of the debt limit increase he just requested from Congress.  It’s also less than half of what Obama tossed away on his supposed green-tech jobs stimulus.

Obama’ plan eliminates 1,000 positions through attrition (when workers retire, you don’t rehire for their position), out of a total of roughly 2.1 million federal employees. Which is just another reminder that while there may be waste to be wrung out of government, it doesn’t affect the larger debt picture very much.  While symbolically important–especially because similar reform efforts by previous White House administrations have often failed–the specific consolidations being proposed would barley dent the number of workers and the amount of spending in the country’s vast federal bureaucracy.  In fact, this administration has added an additional 100,000 federal jobs since taking power.

Congressional Republicans scoffed at the relatively small scale of Obama’s proposal, saying many more cutbacks are needed to tame the deficit. “After presiding over one of the largest expansions of government in history, and a year after raising the issue in his last State of the Union, it’s interesting to see the President finally acknowledge that Washington is out of control,” said Don Stewart, spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.). Stewart said McConnell’s office will review the details of the plan once the White House provides them.

So after blowing trillions we are now to assume that ‘Bama boy wants to reduce the federal Leviathan? And what about the abomination of Obamacare???
