It’s called “radar adaptive cruise control”, it’s a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee which is just a cheep Mercedes ML in disguise. Had it for near two years … It’s great. Jeep and Mercedes blended their technology contributions long before Chrysler went bust. What did Mercedes want the 4 wheel drive technology and suspension that jeep had, what did Jeep want the body structure and technology that Mercedes had.
So the two companies traded. And what emerged was the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. It is nothing like the decades older version and is completely modern. The dash even has iPhone technology which talks to you when your phone is in the car.
So to the point comes Radar Adaptive Cruise Control. Well it already saved me from a crash when another car darted out in front of me and without touching the brakes the car computers did all the work, slowed the car even before I could react, and prevented a crash. It works best when cruising the freeway, where cars speed up and slow down, and detecting those subtle speed changes can be taxing.
The robot car was born, not really autonomous driving but a start.
The radar adaptive cruise control, and it’s amazingly good … makes me feel like autonomous cars are closer than I thought, though there are many bugs to iron out before we get that far.

The ad would be more convincing if Jeep didn’t open up jobs in China this month and not America.

Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne announced the plans in mid-January.
“As part of our global expansion of the Jeep brand, there are some cars — that because of the price position in the market — can never be made in the U.S. and exported,” Marchionne told reporters on the sidelines of the North American International Auto Show. “We’re going to be announcing the first step in the globalization of Jeep (in China). There’s another one that’s going to come in Russia. These things are part of a natural process of expansion.”
Marchionne said he will keep “the pillar cars of the Jeep (brand) in the United States. Wrangler is one. The Grand Cherokee is another. These are things that need to be protected because they represent the best and the essence of Jeep. If you tell me I cannot make a Patriot somewhere else, I might as well go out of the market.”
If America is ever “made whole” again, it likely won’t be because of Jeep.
Yes it is sickening, but cheap cars are made in China not the USA.

Today Chrysler announced they were building Jeeps in China.
USA Today reported:
Fiat and Chrysler Group have reached an agreement to expand passenger car manufacturing and sales in China, officials said Tuesday.
Under the agreement, Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. Ltd. will build one Jeep model in China for Chrysler for sale in China. A specific model was not announced.
Zeng Qinghong, general manager and chief executive of Guangzhou Automobile Group, and Mike Manley, Jeep president and CEO and head of Chrysler’s international operations, signed the agreement at Chrysler headquarters here.
In September, Guangzhou began building the Fiat Viaggio in China.
I wouldn’t buy a Chinese built car, period. What China lacks is the material scieces, the things that make bolts storng. among other technologies.

According to Automotive News, Alan Batey, GM’s U.S. sales chief, was shocked and surprised that Ford and Chrysler were offering so many high-dollar incentives and promotional deals to consumers. In fact, according to GM, the average amount of money spent was $500 more per pickup, with the highest amounts totalling as much as $1,500 and $1,700 more than Chevrolet or GMC.
Of course, Ford and Ram were spending big mostly because they are trying to sell down their 2012 models on the lots to make way for either an all-new 2013, like the Ram 1500, or significantly upgraded models, like the 2013 F-150.
In some ways, GM is suffering from the fact that it has a highly anticipated all-new model coming for 2014, so it needed to build up a hefty stockpile of 2013 models to accommodate the change-over downtime that each of the half-ton production plants will need to endure while manufacturing changes are made. (For those who keep track, that’s why the days’ supply of GM half-tons is higher than they would like, at 139 days.)
If there’s a silver lining to any of this, Batey notes, it’s that even though GM’s sales may be flat or a touch behind compared with last November (some dealers attribute it to fewer incentives), the automaker does have an average transaction price about $2,700 higher than last, all of which goes directly to GM’s bottom line.
It’s no surprise that Ram dealers want to get rid of the 2012 models quickly to make way for the coming all-new Ram 1500, but the big test will come when we see how well the market responds when the full lineup is available. Likewise, GM dealers will need to be very careful how they prepare themselves when the all-new Silverado and Sierra 1500s finally roll off the plant lines.
Dealerships and truck makers will have to be very careful how much money they’re willing to put on the hood of a new truck just to make a sale. Toyota found out how punishing that game can be, and we’re guessing GM will have to be very good about walking the tightrope with its new truck as well.
Shares of Chrysler parent company Fiat SpA fell by 5.9 percent on Tuesday. Two European banks downgraded the company’s stock, with UBS AG dropping the company’s stock from a “buy” rating to “neutral.” Likewise, Deutsche Bank cut the company’s shares from “hold” to “sell” amid concerns that the company will need a new cash infusion to fund CEO Sergio Marchionne’s plans for the automaker. Marchionne has made it clear he plans to purchase the remainder of Chrysler, which will require Fiat to raise somewhere between 1.6 billion and 2.9 billion euros. That’s due in part to the fact that the company may have to start paying fair-market value for Chrysler stock as the company’s initial public offer grows near.
Bloomberg reports Marchionne is keen to increase the Fiat stake in Chrysler in order to access the profitable North American manufacturer’s cash flow. Fiat could then use those funds to jump start its ailing European operations, though Marchionne has been quoted as saying Fiat doesn’t need Chrysler’s cash to bring its EU business in line. Last quarter, Fiat reported 20 billion euros of available liquidity, down from 22.7 billion euros at the end of June
Pre-dates Obama and his stupid EPA … It’s been known for decades how to do this, just space out the gears for lower of-the-line grunt, then lower the cruise RPM with overdrive ratios for better fuel economy. The new Mercedes designed Chrysler built 3.6 liter six is the perfect engine for this match-up.

A 16% improvement in fuel efficiency is expected from nine-speed transmission
Automakers are pulling out all the stops and looking to squeeze every single mile per gallon out of their automobiles by any means necessary. Automakers are looking at more fuel-efficient engines with smaller displacements, but they’re also looking at reducing the weight of vehicles and increasing the number of forward gears used in car/truck transmissions.
Adding forward gears to a transmission makes a lot of sense because the slower the engine spins, the less fuel it consumes. In years past automatic transmissions used in vehicles commonly had four or five forward gears. More recent vehicles are moving up to six-speed and in some cases even eight-speed automatic transmissions in luxury vehicles. Chrysler is eyeing even more gears inside with nine-speed gearboxes for more mainstream vehicles.
According to Mircea Gradu, vice president transmission powertrain driveline engineering, Chrysler will roll out its first nine-speed transmission by the first half of 2013. “I’m convinced that, sooner or later, others will come up with similar solutions,” Gradu said in an interview from his office in Auburn Hills, Michigan, where Chrysler is based. “Hopefully, the time will be as long as possible until they catch up with the technology.”
Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne believes that the automaker and its various brands will be able to meet looming fuel-efficiency standards by using technology that improves traditional gasoline engines combined with better transmissions rather than moving to plug-in hybrids and pure electric vehicles. CAFE standards will reach 54.5 mpg by 2025.
Michael Omotoso, a powertrain analyst at LMC Automotive, said, “They’re [Chrysler] doing basically the bare minimum to satisfy government regulations. Their strategy is to meet the standards with minimum investment.”
Bloomberg reports that the nine-speed transmission Chrysler is developing could boost fuel economy of certain models by as much as 16%. Chrysler has already scored a 15% boost in the highway fuel economy of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger by adding an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Here’s what the relevant portion of Marchionne’s memo, published in full at the Detroit News actually says:
We also are investing to improve and expand our entire U.S. operations, including our Jeep facilities. The numbers tell the story:
- We will invest more than $1.7 billion to develop and produce the next generation Jeep SUV, the successor of the Jeep Liberty — including $500 million directly to tool and expand our Toledo Assembly Complex and will be adding about 1,100 jobs on a second shift by 2013.
- At our Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where we build the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have created 2,000 jobs since June 2009 and have invested more than $1.8 billion.
- In Belvidere, where we build two Jeep models, we have added two shifts since 2009 resulting in an additional 2,600 jobs.
With the increase in demand for our vehicles, especially Jeep branded vehicles, we have added more than 11,200 U.S. jobs since 2009. Plants producing Jeep branded vehicles alone have seen the number of people invested in the success of the Jeep brand grow to more than 9,300 hourly jobs from 4,700. This will increase by an additional 1,100 as the Liberty successor, which will be produced in Toledo, is introduced for global distribution in the second quarter of 2013.
Last week it was Jeep moving to China when it was just parts production. But now it really is all Jeep production which Fiat is discussing, they want it back in Italy for the jobs most likely. It’s all about jobs who gets them who loses them…
Coming hot on the heels of speculation that some Jeep production may be moved to China comes a bombshell from a Bloomberg report. Fiat is now considering moving Chrysler and Jeep production to Italy.
According to the piece, “To counter the severe slump in European sales, (Fiat CEO Sergio) Marchionne is considering building Chrysler models in Italy, including Jeeps, for export to North America. The Italian government is evaluating tax rebates on export goods to help Fiat. Marchionne may announce details of his plan as soon as Oct. 30, the people said.”
So, let’s be real clear here, we are talking about vehicles that will be built in Italy and exported to America. The evidence is clear that Fiat is looking at ways to move production of vehicles from the US to elsewhere, whether it be China or Italy, costing American jobs. This is becoming indisputable, despite outcries from certain parties to the contrary.
Mitt Romney has rightfully criticized the Obama Administration for handing over Chrysler to the Italians and now leaving the fate of American workers in the hands of Fiat management. Fiat is not a healthy company and the auto industry is in as great a risk as ever. The insistence that all is well by those with political motivations does not mask the danger. More jobs are at risk of being lost and more taxpayer money may be lost as well.
Let’s face it, the auto bailouts were not well thought out. Perhaps General Motors’ CEO, Dan Akerson, said it best when he said, “The good thing about our bankruptcy is that it took only 39 days. The bad news is that bankruptcy took only 39 days. If we had been there longer, people would have asked these questions and looked at these things.”
The whole auto industry bailout process was rushed through with the wrong primary motivation of protecting the politically powerful UAW’s interests. The Obama Administration never considered that giving Chrysler to Fiat was not a great idea and could eventually hurt the same UAW workers it was trying to protect. Manufacturers like Chrysler and GM are at a competitive disadvantage due to UAW obligations that were not properly addressed in the bankruptcy process. The industry is more competitive than ever and the government does not seem to be the best innovators to lead the sector to real health. This truth is very likely to become more apparent when the political season ends.
Lifetime Democrat Lee Iacocca just endorsed Romney…
After a lifetime of voting for and supporting Democrats — and even declining appointment to the U.S. Senate from a Democratic governor — Lee Iacocca Thursday endorsed Republican Mitt Romney for president.
The blessings of the onetime Chrysler chairman are expected to help Romney in two highly competitive states: Pennsylvania, where the 88-year-old Iacocca was born and raised and is still widely respected, and in Michigan, where Iacocca rose to become a major figure in the auto industry and won international praise for cobbling together the government-backed loans that saved Chrysler in 1980.
Iacocca, who now lives in California, issued a statement saying he backed Romney because of his “dozens of years of experiences in the public and private sectors” and because the GOP nominee has a plan that “will enable a stronger America.”
What makes Iacocca’s endorsement of Romney particularly newsworthy is that, although he has long insisted he is an independent, the onetime auto titan has a history of supporting more Democrats than Republicans. He backed George W. Bush for president in 2000, but then backed John Kerry in 2004. Four years ago, he endorsed then-Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico for the Democratic nomination for president. In 1991, following the death of Sen. John Heinz (R-Ill.), Pennsylvania’s then-Democratic Gov. Bob Casey Sr. publicly voiced a desire to appoint Keystone State son Iacocca to fill the vacancy in the Senate. But Iacocca declined, and the appointment went to Democrat Harris Wofford.
